Towards sustainable mobility and fuel efficiency.

Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. With annual events first in the Americas, then Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy. The events spark debate about the future of mobility and inspire young engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency.

MMU Grune Welt 2015 - Early Preparation and Troubleshooting

During the first week of last semester break (12th May-16th May 2014), while majority of the MMU students were enjoying the holiday leisurely, MMU Grune Welt team had rose and shone to do the early preparation and troubleshooting on the existing Eco-V3. Every member is divided into respective groups to handle different parts of Eco V3.
The following is the progress of pending task and the member in charge:
1.Design of test stand - Kar Jin and Vettel Soon
2. Sourcing the V-brake - Yi Lin and Vanisha Ashweeni Nandagopal
3. Chain guard design - Joel Yeo
4. The chain and the sprocket - Janet Tan and Alice Leong
5. Brake lever mounting design - Eric Yap
6. Jaw Clutch design - Kelvin Lee and William
7. Steering design - WeiXuan Chai
8. EFI - Wen Guey Cheaw and Clyde Ng

Issac, Eric and Yi Lin fixing the rear wheel into position to test position of the new V-Brake.

Kar Jin, Vettel and Issac are fixing up the base of the test stand.

Janet and Alice are trying out the fixing and compatibility of the new spacer in replacing of the old, worn out spacer.

Besides, the members also attended the Inventor Professional beginner course at CBT lab (FET 4th floor) guided by our very own supporting lecturers, Mr Lim Boon Kian and Mr Sim Hock Kheng. From this beginner course, the junior members will be benefited by the knowledge.

Apart from that, on 24th April 2014, Mr. Klaus from DK Composites came to MMU Melaka for a technical talk titled: "On the Path of Engineering -The design of MMU’s Eco-V3 Prototype Car"
The technical talk is a sharing session in designing of MMU's Eco-V3. DK Composites was very supportive in the making of MMU Eco- V3.

MMU Grune Welt 2012 - Fabrication of Chassis @ CTRM

CTRM worker is teaching Body-Shell & Chassis (BSC) members on how to sanding in proper way with patient

Filleting chassis edges

Fillet is formed

Marking the line to leave spacing for tyre

Cutting is done

Filleting the edges
Laminating the honeycomb structure composite materials

The bushing have been tested whether it fits in or not after the drilling process

Laminating of the chassis is done

Some specific parts have been drilled to make holes

A mixture of polyester (PE) , carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) &hardener is use to strengthen the chassis.
High-density Polystyrenes bars are fixed at the corners of the chassis to serve as frames to prevent deformation caused by bending.

Laminating is done

In manufacturing and design, a mockup, or mock-up, is a scale or full-size model of a design or device, used for teaching, demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and other purposes. A mockup is called a prototype if it provides at least part of the functionality of a system and enables testing of a design.
(adapted from wikipedia)

Team MMU Grüne Welt had their very 1st mockup on 26th of November 2011. The team use wooden board as their base of the chassis and some wooden plank for the body structure.

Mr. Umar Nirmal is supervising team MMU Grüne Welt and give suggestion to the team during the mock-up.

The driver of the team, Joshua is testing the driving position during the mock-up.

Engine group (Ming Han & Sze Tong) are measuring the dimension of the engine in order to fabricate a frame to hold the engine.

Beautiful sparks when Sze Tong is grinding the steel bar.

The engine is fixed on the steel plate.

Transmission group is making thread for the bicycle spokes.

Vince & Chia Wei are trying to fix all the spokes to the bicycle rim.

Ping Sheng is trying to turn the steel rod into a smaller diameter for the use of steering.

Hao Jie is using Autodesk Inventor to do the stress analysis to find the suitable size for the shaft.

Hao Jie and Wan Jvin are working together to measure the distance of the steer rod to the bulkhead.

The outline of the base of the shell is drew on the polystyrene.

Get ready to glue the polystyrene to the base by using PVA glue.

The polystyrene have been successfully stick on the base.

The model of body is almost formed and ready

The team uses heated tungsten wires to shape it into a more aerodynamic shape.

The model is finally is formed

Layers of newspapers and polyester (PE) have been used to form the body

Hand-make body is released

Modeling the prototype with team members & Mr. Lim B.K (team supervisor).

MMU Grune Welt 2012

After the official race day, most of the team members are in their final year and had graduated. Kelvin Lau, the team manager of MMU Grüne Welt 2011 had passed the post to Jude Leornard. Congratulation Jude!
It's quite a weird to have a "hammer" to symbolize the ceremony.

Jude as the leader for the team had started recruit more members to enter Shell Eco-marathon 2012 competition. Of course, the 2nd driver, Joshua had also been promoted and become the 1st driver. So far there are only 3 members have not graduated yet and are still doing their 2nd year of mechanical engineering studies. They are Jude, Joshua and Meng How. These 3 guys are the veteran for the team.

The recruitment was starting from early of August and the response was quite good. As the number of members are restricted to 20 pax by the organizer. The team needed to have interview session. The interview was carried out by Dr. Dirk Rilling, Mr. Lim B.K on 5th of August 2011. Finally the new  MMU Grüne Welt 2012 was officially formed on 8th of August 2011!!
