The Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. With annual events first in the Americas, then Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy. The events spark passionate debate around the future of energy and mobility, and inspire young engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency.
The history of the Shell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the United States as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicles. From these humble origins, the organized competition for fuel economy evolved and moved to Europe. In its current form Shell Eco-marathon Europe began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists from 20 European countries. Later on, it was brought to Americas with much success. Bringing the competition to Asia helps make this programs a true global initiative for Shell.
The competition is categorized into two main categories: “Prototype” and “Urban Concept”. Prototype aims to build the most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient vehicle possible while Urban Concept category offers participants to design and build fuel-economy vehicles that are close in appearance to today's passenger cars. All the built vehicles are powered by one of the following energy types:

- Ethanol E100 (100% Ethanol)

- Hydrogen
- Battery Electric
